On weekends we get very busy, so we recommend booking ahead. From Friday 1st May, in good weather, we offer outdoor dining, where guests can enjoy dishes from our Garden Menu without a reservation.
If the date you want to book is fully booked, you can add yourself to the waitlist for a table reservation or an overnight stay at The Abbey Inn here.
We serve pub classics with an Oldstead twist. Our main menu is available Monday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings and Monday, Friday & Saturday lunchtimes.
On a Sunday, we offer our Sunday Roast menu from 12pm – 7pm.

When making a booking, please let us know of any allergies or intolerances.
Whilst we follow best practice at all times, we do like to highlight the fact that all the dishes we serve are produced in an environment where allergens are also prepared and cooked. We cannot guarantee that the environment will be completely allergen-free.
Due to limited space in our kitchens we are unable to provide a menu suitable for coeliacs.

We do offer a vegetarian menu at The Abbey Inn, but regretfully, we can not offer a completely plant based menu.
How many people can the Private Dining Room accommodate?
The Private Dining Room can accommodate up to 14 people. There is no minimum number of guests, however a minimum spend is applied to bookings:

Saturdays | £1000 minimum spend (excluding service)

We serve our seasonal a la carte menu.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
There’s no deposit needed on booking. Full payment will be taken for the minimum spend amount 14 days prior to the date of your booking.
Do we need to make a pre-order?
No pre-order is required, you are welcome to order on the day.
What time can I book for?
All private dining bookings will be made for either 12noon or 6.00pm
What’s the cancellation policy?
If cancelled within 14 days the full minimum spend amount would be retained, unless we can re-let the tables.

We look forward to welcoming you, your family and friends to celebrate special occasions with us. We can offer a table for up to 12 guests in our main dining room, The Piggery. This is bookable both for lunch or dinner every day the Abbey in open.
As a cosy country pub, there is little space for large birthday decorations as this can impose on other diners. Should you wish to bring a small balloon that is absolutely fine.
We will also supply candles which can be used in one of our desserts – if you choose one – but we do ask you not to bring your own cakes into The Abbey Inn.

The Abbey Inn is a Grade II listed, nineteenth-century building with uneven surfaces, different floor heights and steps.
We have a ramp to access the larger dining room to the rear of the Inn, but please note our only accessible toilet is to the rear of the building by the car park and there is no internal access.
All our bedrooms are situated on the 1st floor with 2 sets of stairs for access. For this reason, we like to make parties aware that the accommodation might not be suitable for guests with mobility issues.

We have three first-floor rooms at The Abbey Inn which have been designed with a mix of beautiful antique furniture, luxurious fabrics and roll-top baths. All are offered on DBB with table reservations required at The Abbey Inn.

When their rooms are fully booked we open availability for our rooms with a dinner reservation for their tasting menu in the evening. If you are dining at our sister restaurant The Black Swan Oldstead and would like to book a taxi from The Abbey Inn, we highly recommend booking one well in advance as there are no taxis at Byland. We are directly located opposite Byland Abbey. From Thirsk take the A19 towards York, after 2 miles take the Thirkleby/Coxwold/Helmsley turn off and follow directions for Byland Abbey.

Up to 4 guests; We kindly require guests to provide a minimum of 24 hours notice if you are not able to attend.
5-8 guests; For cancellations within 72 hours of the arrival date and time of the booking, we will charge a cancellation charge of £20 per person to the card details provided, unless we can re-let the booking.
9-12 guests; For cancellations within 7 days of the arrival date and time of the booking, we will charge a cancellation charge of £20 per person to the card details provided, unless we can re-let the booking.

We may not be able to serve guests with multiple requirements or very restricted diets. As our food includes dairy products throughout, we are not able to cater for guests with severe lactose allergies or those who require a dairy-free diet.
Please note that we do not allow you to bring your own cakes into The Abbey Inn. If you are celebrating a special occasion please contact reservations at info@abbeyinnbyland.co.uk and the team will be happy to advise on ways to enhance your visit.
Room Cancellation Policy
We require a £100 per room per night deposit to secure room bookings. In the event of a cancellation within 14 days of the arrival date we will keep the whole deposit as a cancellation charge. If we are able to re-let the booking we will refund the whole deposit (minus a £10 administration charge). In the event of a cancellation outside of 14 days of the arrival date, we will refund the whole deposit (minus a £10 administration charge).
We are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment for everyone. As such, we have a zero-tolerance policy for any antisocial behaviour, including behaviour directed toward other guests or members of our team.
Disruptive, aggressive, or disrespectful conduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances. We reserve the right to refuse service or ask individuals to leave the premises if their behaviour negatively impacts others, without refund.
Thank you for your understanding and for helping us maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all.
Children are very welcome in the restaurant. We have a child-friendly menu for children under 12, but they are able to choose dishes from the main menu if preferred. Please let us know at the time of booking how many children are in your party and if you require any booster seats/high chairs.
Due to spacing in our dining areas, we are not able to accommodate buggies, pushchairs or prams at the table.
Unfortunately we are not able to accommodate anyone under 18 years old within the guest bedrooms.
Child Changing Facilities
We have children’s changing facilities in the indoor women’s toilets and for male parents/guardians there are also changing facilities in the accessibility toilet located outside, to the rear of the building.
Dogs are allowed in the bar and main dining area but not within the bedrooms (with the exception of service dogs). We ask that you keep your dog on a lead at all times whether inside or in the garden area. Please let us know when booking if you are bringing a dog so we can allocate the best table for you.
Should your dog bark excessively or display aggressive behaviour towards other dogs or guests, we will ask that you remove your dog from the premises.

Our car park is available to Abbey Inn guests and English Heritage badge holders only. We would be grateful if our guests would use the car park to the rear of the Abbey Inn. Please do not park on the grass verges between Byland and Wass.
Further parking is available at the lay-by on Byland Bank (on the left at the bottom the hill as you approach Byland Abbey from Coxwold).
Ramblers are very welcome to use the car park at Wass Village Hall – a donation to the maintenance of their car park is appreciated. This is then a 15 minute walk to The Abbey Inn.
Outdoor dining is available from Friday 1st May. Tables in the garden are not available to book and are on a first-come, first-served basis.

We have comfortable seating by the fireplace close to the bar, so you can pop in for a drink with no need to eat as well. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

We are happy to accept small camper vans that fit within a normal parking space as long as guests have a booking for lunch or dinner.
However our parking facilities are not available for overnight parking without prior booking and arrangement.
