Welcome to The Abbey Inn

A nineteenth century, historic inn transformed into a cosy, relaxed country pub with rooms, overlooking the historic ruins of Byland Abbey in North Yorkshire. Serving a seasonal menu created by Chef Director Tommy Banks, alongside an excellently curated drinks list from real hand-pumped ales to seasonal cocktails. Awarded Sustainable Pub of the Year in the Gastro Pub Awards 2025 and Best Sunday Roast in the U.K by The Good Food Guide in 2024.

Our Garden Menu

From May, we’re pleased to be opening our garden for dining once again.

Drop in to enjoy a pint and some Oldstead-style snacks overlooking the iconic Abbey ruins, or, for something more substantial, how about a Dexter beef smash burger with fermented chilli burger sauce and pickles, followed by one of our dreamy soft-serve sundaes - perfect for sunny afternoons. Oh, and on Sundays, there’s the added option of our ever popular filled Yorkshire puddings.

We won’t be taking bookings outside, so just come along and grab your table.

We are directly located opposite Byland Abbey. From Thirsk take the A19 towards York, after 2 miles take the Thirkleby/Coxwold/Helmsley turn off and follow directions for Byland Abbey.

Stay overnight and dine at The Abbey Inn, sampling our proper pub classics. You will be able to make a table reservation during the room booking process. Breakfast is served at our sister restaurant, The Black Swan (1 mile away).
Please note that The Abbey Inn is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
